Scripting a magnum opus on mridangam – Mridanga Cintamanih – Umayalpuram K.Sivaraman
At 73, he is never tired of experimenting, innovating and performing with his instrument. When people ask whether he runs a school, his reply has always been, “I am only running a school of thought.”
And in the 63rd year of his journey with mridangam, Umayalpuram K.Sivaraman says, “I find solace, bliss, tranquility and the best in my life when I play mridangam in concerts, doing research and creating a lot of novel, but traditional, work for the present and future generation of percussionists.” Such a novel work was released in Kerala on Tuesday – ‘Mridanga Cintamanih’ – a collection of seven DVDs – which covers the A to Z about mridangam, running into a time-frame of 22 hours, 30 minutes. And he treated music lovers to a unique performance at Swati Thirunal College of Music, where he was honoured by Swaralaya and the College, on Tuesday.
