Carnatic music students have to rely a great deal on their Lakshya gnana which is imbibed by repeated listening to live concerts of both vocalists and instrumentalists. Of course, media such as radio and television do provide opportunities to listen to the artists but serious listening, which would enhance one's sangeetha gnana, can be derived only by listening to the live concerts. This is as far as Lakshya gnana is concerned. Mere Lakshya gnana is insufficient for a student to blossom into a full-fledged performer. The technicalities and grammar associated with ragas and talas have to be learnt from competent gurus.

TSB’s genius remembered

The Jayanti (90th) of Harikatha exponent T.S. Balakrishna Sastrigal was celebrated at Rani Seethai Mandram past Sunday afternoon.

Welcoming the gathering, his eldest son and technocrat-turned-film director T.S.B.K. Moulee expressed his desire to collect the recordings of his father’s from various sources, digitise and make them available for posterity.

S.B. Khanthan, Moulee’s brother and chartered accountant turned film director, recalled how Mahaperiyava evinced keen interest in Sastrigal’s Tyagaraja Ramayanam wherein he had seamlessly sewn select kritis of the saint poet to unfold the epic.

CHENNAI:There is a need for sensitivity to understand the fine arts and humanities and the values that flow from the tradition of Marga and Bharathanatyam, said N. Murali Managing Director of The Hindu and President, The Music Academy, here on Saturday.

Speaking at a function to launch ‘Karana Prakaranam, Marga Tradition Revived,’ a DVD by dancer Padma Subrahmanyam, he said this was essential, particularly so in this age when violence and strife were prevalent. He said her contribution went beyond Bharathanatyam and Marga tradition.
