When one is driving a car a long distance, one is bound to get bored. One could overcome the boredom by reading a book. Sounds like a prescription for disaster, doesn't it? Well, what if someone reads out a book to us as we drive? That could get monotonous too, and might even have a soporific effect. But what if 30-odd voices read out the dialogue, with modulation and inflexions, then wouldn't that be like listening to a radio play? Except, that in a radio play, we have no descriptive passages. But in an audio book like Swathi Solutions' ‘Sivagamiyin Sabatham,' the descriptive passages from the original book, are in tact too.

Vocalist Chitra Srikrishna brings together several composers and compositions in her two music albums

There are so many ways in which one could make CD packaging an interesting combo. Thematic assemblage is something we notice these days, and what we have in Carnatic vocalist Chitra Srikrishna's latest offer is her bringing together of several kritis on Lord Anjaneya from a variety of composers for her audio CD“Anjaneya Aarathi”(CD, Swathi Sanskriti Series,Rs. 150). She is accompanied by Charulatha Ramanujam on the violin and C.Cheluvaraju on the mridanga.

Kalki Krishnamurthy

Krishnamurthy was born at Puttamangalam in the Thanjavur district in an orthodox, large Brahmin family with limited means. After primary education in the village, Krishnamurthy joined the National High School at Tiruchi, about 100 kilometres away. When Mahatma Gandhi launched his non-cooperation movement in 1921, thousands of students gave up their studies to participate; Krishnamurthy was among them. Inspired by Gandhi's speech at a public meeting in Tiruchi, and despite the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination being just three months away, he left school and joined the Indian National Congress.

Palghat R. Raghu

Palghat R. Raghu

Palghat R. Raghu was born on January 9, 1928 in Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar). He died of cardiac arrest on June 2, 2009.[1] As a child, he was immensely talented and inducted into mridangam lessons very early in his life. His first mridangam lessons were from Tinniam Venkatarama Iyer and Trichy Raghava Iyer. Later he learnt the art from the legendary Mridangam wizard Palghat T. S. Mani Iyer. Ever since, he has accompanied numerous artists for the past 60 years with distinction. He is a graduate of mathematics.
