Dr.S.V.Ramanan : Born of illustrious parents, Director K Subrahmaniyam (a pioneer of South Indian Cinema) andSmt. Meenakshi Subrahmanyam, a musician par excellence., Dr S V Ramanan has inherited and incorporated this unique flair for art and creativity in the cultural and film media over the last two decades.

A graduate of commerce, Dr S V Ramanan took to a film career under his father’s guidance. He has had the unique opportunity of working with renowned technicians in the fields of audiography, photography, Music direction and other allied fields. He started his own production unit, Jaishree Pictures in the year 1972.

Travelling extensively around the world and interacting with top film and TV Network Crews, Dr S V Ramanan has kept abreast of the latest technology in film production, enabling him to give his clients the very best. On the other hand, striking a perfect balance is his flair for aesthetic sense.

A talented music composer, Dr S V Ramanan has scored music for a variety of art forms ranging from 10 seconds Radio Commercials to full length feature films, dance dramas, light and sound shows and the like. he reminisces proudly about the opportunity he had to adapt Rabindranath Tagore’s SHYAMA in Tamil as a dance ballet. In the musical score for this, Ramanan added local flavour to Tagore’s original Rabindra Sangeeth.

The mammorth sound and light show of Kamba Ramayanam – “Kamban Tharum Katchi” organised by Chinmaya mission in Madras, had Dr S V Ramanan incharge of background musical score, apart from lending his resonating voice for some of the participants.

Dr S V Ramanan accompanied his sister, the internationally renowned dancer and research scholar Dr Padma Subrahmanyam as music composer and singer on her tour to the then USSR, Poland, Mongolia, Germany apart from Singapore and Malaysia. On these tours, Ramanan and the team led by Smt. Shyamala Balakrishnan, a research scholar on folk music of Tamilnadu, enthralled the audiences with authentic folk songs from this region. Dr S V Ramanan has also participated in several interstate Cultural Programs.

His Radio Programs for the National Savings Organization on the Cultural Heritage of India was a great favorite among the listeners.

Early in his career, he specialized in making short films for Fertilizer companies, which went on to become great hits with the rural audience and he was conferred an honorary Doctorate in rural communication. His imaginative scripts and narration for Radio Commercials won him great acclaim and when he started Television productions, his name came to be synonymous with quality productions.

Ramanan fondly recalls his period of initial training in all aspects of film making under Veterans include having worked with the renowned Music Director Salil Chowdry. This comprehensive training stood him in good stead when he started his production house.with such impressive work behind him, it is little wonder that Dr S V Ramanan has been honored with numerous National, as well as International awards.

His advertisement film for True Biscuits won an award at the Chicago Film festival. Dr S V Ramanan made another award winning film “HANDS” which was a public awareness film crusading against Corruption. His film on National handlooms won an award from the Vice President and was dubbed into several languages including Russian. His Radio commercials have won several RAPA awards and so have his television serials. He says, “I believe that every production of mine should carry a relevant message; but it should be subliminal like a sugar coated pill because the focus is on entertainment”. In today’s scenario, packaging the program is as important as the content and for this Ramanan’s expertise in marketing helps.

The first Tamil tele – film titled “ENGAY AVAL” produced and directed by Dr S V Ramanan for Madras Doordarsha, received wide acclaim. This story was by the Sahitya Akademy Award Winner Dr Lakshmi. “Uruvangal Maralam” was a feature film directed by Ramanan and it is to his credit that his is perhaps the only film that can boast of a stellar cast like Shivaji Ganesan, Kamalhassan, Rajinikanth, Jaishankar, Y G Mahendra, S Ve Shekar and Suhasini amongst others….

Dr S V Ramanan produced and directed a documentary film on “Thirumala Thirupathi” which was telecast over National Network and docu-drama on great Saints like SHRI RAMANAMAHARISHI and SHIRDI SAIBABA which have been described as a spiritual experience by viewers across the Country.

His style of functioning and his lightning speed at works draws spontaneous response from his audience and his clients alike and are the driving force behind his evergreen creativity.It is to Dr S V Ramanan’s credit that in all his productions, be it a simple Radio Commercial or a mammoth stage production, he has a unique style of presentation whereby combining mass appeal with aesthetic sense.

Apart from Social, Mythological and Historical serials, Ramanan’s foray into current affairs was with “Manu Needhi Mandram” – a 15 minute capsule that was telecast over Sun TV airing public grievances and trying to find immediate solutions by co-ordination with Governmental agencies. The Role of Tamil cinema in the freedom movement is another of his landmark productions with film clippings and interviews with film personalities.

Dr S V Ramanan co-ordinated a group of 50 people along with the Tamil Superstar Rajinikanth on a goodwill tour to spread the message of Universal brotherhood by means of spectacular stage shows.To Dr S V Ramanan also goes the credit of having brought Superstar Rajinikanth to the small screen in a two parts question answer session. The telecast of the program on Chennai Doordarshan brought the whole State to standstill and caused a major sensation.
