The famous Carnatic singer Dr. Shyamala Balakrishnan is the sister-in-law of Dr. Padma Subramanium. Dr. Shyamala Balakrishnan devoted herself to the research on folk and classical art forms of Tamil Nadu. During her research, she found three ex-devdasis at the temple of Muruga at Viralimalai, situated presently in Puddukottai District. In her thesis, she recorded their art, history, traditions and contributions. Each temple had its own tradition of dance style and compositions. Kuttral Temple had its own composition called Kuttrala Kuravanji. Sri Kumbeshwar Temple in Kumbakonam was famous for performing Kumbkeshwar Kuravanji and Viralimalai was known for its Viralimalai Kuravanji. These used to be performed during the annual temple festival.

Dr. Pappu is an expert committee member of the prestigious Music Academy, Chennai and also one of the Secretaries. He is also a regular reviewer of books on Music, Dance and Religion for ‘The Hindu’ and a contributing Editor for the dance and music monthly ‘Sruthi’. He has won the Best Paper Awards several times at The Music Academy, Chennai and has also won the award for the Best Lecture Demonstration of Kuchipudi Dance at Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai.

Lakshmi Vishwanathan

Lakshmi Viswanathan is an iconic dancer and choreographer who has extended the scope of classical Bharatanatyam to include creative works and new ideas. Her Tanjavur style of solo dance with her eloquent Abhinaya has been widely acclaimed and has earned her the sobriquet of a "legend". Her group choreography has been stunning and path-breaking in theme, and style. She has explored many themes, and enriched the dance repertoire in all her work spread over three decades. Originally trained by great Gurus, foremost among them being Kanjivaram Ellappa, Lakshmi evolved her own style and has performed in all the major centres of India, and done our country proud with her engagements in prestigious international festivals like Jacobs Pillow, USA. As a keen researcher she has authored several books, the latest being "Women of Pride - The Devadasi Heritage" (Roli Books - 2008). Nritya Chudamani, Kalaimamani and the Sangeet Natak Academi National Award are some of the high honours she has received.
