A set of 4 CDs under the caption Fourmost is being brought out on the
happy occasion of Shri. Lalgudi Jayaramans 80th.Birth Anniversary celebrations.
The individual titles are RAGA PRAVAHAM, THE LEGEND LEADS, RAGAM-TANAM-PALLAVI
and RANJAKAM.
They contain selected excerpts from some of his solo/duet concerts of 1960s,
70s, and 80,s. The first one presents alapana of four major ragams played
by Lalgudi; the second treats you to three elaborately played kritis in
duet style, first with Srimathi,next with G.J.R.Krishnan and the last with
Vijayalakshmi; the third CD contains a ragam-tanam-pallavi by the maestro
and the last one ,12 Kritis usually very eagerly looked forward to by the
audience with special interest, in all his concerts.Collectively, the 4
CDs serve such a delightful feast of classical Karnatic music that, listening
to it, the contemporary elderly connoisseurs of Karnatic music are very
likely to plunge into a reminiscent mood recalling the several enrapturing
concerts of Lalgudi in the past few decades and members of the younger generations,
aspiring to choose music as a career, may be inspired to emulate Lalgudi.
Legend is an unquestionably appropriate term to describe an extraordinary
musician like Lalgudi who has displayed amazing ability to reach top levels
of excellence in every area he chose to enter in the field of music. An
incomparably superb accompanist in the earlier part of his career, he distinguished
himself as a leading soloist from the early 70s, as a composer of Varnams
and Thillanas bearing the stamp of his unmatched creative imagination, as
a Guru of of several illustrious disciples and as an author of an excellent
dance-drama. All round excellence of this kind in music is rather a very
rare phenomenon and one who accomplishes it stands tall and apart from the
rest. Lalgudi is in this class.
The samples presented in Fourmost CDs give us the insight to perceive
how he acquired this stature in the world of music.
