The Gita Govinda
is a Sringara Mahakavya in 12 Sargas written in high flown Sanskrit by the
celebrated poet Jayadeva (12th C). It consists of 24 songs each containing
8 charanas hence called Ashtapadi. The cult of Radha and Krishna has derived
its inspiration from Jayadeva. Though outwardly it is Sringara, the inherent
message is Bhakthi. This product deserves special mention as it has been
sung melodiously and soulfully in Hindusthani ragas by Dr. Premeela Gurumurthy,
Professor and Head of the Department of Indian Music. She is both an academician
(Masters in Indian Philosophy and Indian Music) and a concert performer
in Carnatic music, devotional music and also an accomplished Harikatha exponent.
She made a special study of Ashtapadis and Bhajans with Sri P.S. Sreenivasa
Rao, a well versed Hindusthani musician who has set to tune many Bhajans
besides these Ashtapadis.
