Artists are both born and taught. But some artists arrive in the world brimming with passion and natural creativity to become legends. Madurai Somu was one of them.
Sri Madurai Somu was one of the unique vidwans who had performed continuously for seven or eight hours with full throated voice with an amazing talent especially in elaborating rare ragas. His performances were extremely emotive, enjoyable and entertaining. Somu, was famous for talking during the concerts, his words wouldn't be just words but soft sounds.
This CD brings out a lot of his soul filling compositions as well as lots of compositions in rare ragas. Imaginative mind of Somu made him create many fascinating compositions and Ragas which created "Ananda" in every Rasikas.
Madurai Somu was famous for elucidating the syllables of the pallavi line which invokes the sub conscious state of the rasikas mind as well as gives a very clear expression of his expertise in Laya. He had set a new trend in the way he created his RTP's. He was one of the few artists who exhibited both humor and emotion in his RTPs. The Keeravani RTP on Madurai Meenakshi in this CD is truly a master piece, exploring an outstanding performance of Somu's stylish yet an emotive version of 'Somu-Style' RTP.
Somu is also famous for his musical words during the concerts, While reaching the upper octaves Somu would stop for some time and says words like "Muruga", Somu's ever famous "Ennakavi Padinalum" in this CD has a lot of his famous musical words "Andava", "Muruga" and his other popular song "Ninaikada Neram" in this CD which was set in a rare raga, one of the ragas that he created & popularized are just few examples of the legends creativity.
Rare ragas like Gopikathilakam, Kuvalayabaranam, Chayatharangini, Mand were elaborated in detail along with Somu's famous soothing nerevals.
We can still get a semblance of that era by going back to listening to these legends.
