Synopsis

The myriad facets of the versatile Mrdangam maestro Dr Trichy Sankaran are presented in this CD. Torch- bearer of the renowned Pudukottai school of percussion, and the star disciple of his Guru Sri Pazhani Subramania Pillai, Sankaran has added new dimensions to the art of playing mrdangam. In his roles as teacher, composer and collaborator , Sankaran has been a trail blazer opening new vistas both to his students and to art lovers. Firmly rooted in tradition, to which he has added his rich contributions, Sankaran is an innovator, daring in his explorations of music on the global scene in the company of musicians of the east and west. Among the many honors and awards received by him, the title “Sangita Kalanidhi” bestowed on him by the Music Academy, Madras in 2011, in recognition of his eminence in the Carnatic music field, deserves special mention.

There are tracks on this CD where Sankaran plays Mrdangam solo in different cycles of rhythm. Reminiscent of his legendary Guru, who played both Mrdangam and Kanjira, Sankaran presents a solo on Kanjira on one of the tracks. Vocal rendition of a challenging 21 beat Thiruppugazh with his daughter Suba Sankaran and a Thillana composed by him, are instances of his impeccable mastery of vocal music. The finale is an evocative meshing of melody and rhythm composed by Sankaran and performed with instruments such as the Dumbek , Darabuka and Marimba , interspersed with Konnakol (cadenced recitation of rhythmic syllables) by Sankaran and his disciples.

Swathi Soft Solutions is proud to release this recording on the occasion of the felicitation by the Thyagaraja Aradhana Committee, Cleveland, where Vidwan Trichy Sankaran will be receiving the honor and title “Sangita Rathnakara” in March 2013.
