Synopsis

This product brings to music lovers a garland of Viruttams brilliantly performed by Prof. T.R. Subramanyam, a doyen among Carnatic musicians. He has sung both Tamil and Sanskrit Viruttams in the most enticing manner emphasizing on the enunciation of the words and giving great importance to the raga bhava and emotional content of the lyrics. In most of these Viruttam passages he has been accompanied by Violin virtuoso T.Rukmini and in a few by the violin maestro M.Chandrashekar

A Viruttam(Tamil) is a devotional verse sung in Carnatic music concerts. They are referred to as Slokams in Sanskrit. Viruttams are not sung to talas and are mainly improvised using one or more ragas. It is one of the different forms of Manodharma Sangeetham (extemporization) in Carnatic music. Mostly Viruttams are sung at the end of a concert as a ragamalika or in a single raga. Occasionally, multiple Viruttams are sung in different ragams, followed by a song in the same ragam as the last sung ragam of the Viruttam. Singing Viruttams reveals the extent of creativity of a musician. Viruttams have great emotive and devotional appeal and can give the performer as well as the listeners a transcendent experience.
