Synopsis

Violin: R. K. Shriramkumar | Mridangam : Poongulam Subramanian | Khanjira : K. V. Gopalakrishnan

Ambujam Krishna (1917 - 1989) belonged to the well-known TVS family, renowned Chennai-based industrialists. Her musical training was under Karaikudi Ganeshan and Madurai Ganesha Bhagavatar. An extremely pious individual and an ardent lover of the arts, she composed in Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Manipravalam. Her songs are noted for their imagination, chaste language, clarity of thought and inspired spontaneity. She composed around 600 songs and these were tuned by well known contemporary vidwans. This album contains some of her less well-known compositions, tuned by the legendary musician-scholar *Sangita Kalanidhi* Dr. S. Ramanathan. Sung by his prime disciple Smt. S. Sowmya, the compositions have been rendered as envisaged by Dr. Ramanathan and learnt directly from him. These songs were presented at the Music Academy, Madras in a live performance under the auspices of the Ambujam Krishna Foundation on Sept. 11th 2010.
