Live Concert of Tanjore S. Kalyanaraman
Tanjore S. Kalyanaraman (1930 - 1994), popularly known as SKR, was one of the most original and creative geniuses to grace the Carnatic Music fraternity. Born in a celebrated musical lineage, SKR became one of the foremost disciples of the legendary G. N. Balasubramaniam and eventually established himself as an original musician in his own right. SKR was arguably a maverick, often singing rare kritis and elaborating vivadi ragas not attempted by popular musicians of his time. His style was musically complex. He popularized the Śruti bhedam technique introduced by his guru. He used nadais extensively and his renditions of vivadi ragas like Chandrajyothi, Sucharitra and Hamsanadam were memorable. Kalyanaraman popularized the GNB bani and immortalized his guru's hallmark ragas like Shanmukhapriya, Kalyani, Shankarabharanam, Kapi Narayani and many more. He gave distinctive Hindustani touches to desiya ragas like Dwijawanti, Brindavana Saranga and Hamir Kalyani. He ultimately evolved his own baani which effectively combined GNB's uniqueness with his own multi - faceted creativity. SKR's invaluable contributions included his own compositions, creation of Panchama Varjitha Dvimadhyama Raagaas, Tillanas, tuning the Ashtapadis and songs of later composers like Guru Surajananda and N. S. Chidambaram. This recording showcases many aspects of this multi-faceted genius performing before a live audience, supported by two respected accompanists Smt.T.Rukmini and Srimushnam Shri. V. Raja Rao.
