Born in a family of musicians, Tanjore S. Kalyanaraman had his initial training in music from his father Srinivasa Iyer. He honed his immense talent under the illustrious legend G.N. Balasubramaniam, a rage among musicians in those days. This wonderful combination of musical heritage and intensive training under a musical genius helped Kalyanaraman master the art. He was easily one of the best disciples of GNB in that, he imbibed the assets of his guru and gave it a stamp of originality too. He was a good composer himself. His felicity to render rare and vivadi ragas is unparalleled. He was one of the most versatile musicians the carnatic music world has ever seen.
Accompanying SKR on the violin is the maestro M.S.Gopalakrishnan. A top ranking violinist, outstanding soloist and accompanist, MSG has been in the music arena for over 50 years playing both Hindustani and Carnatic Music. On the mridangam is the all time great revolutionary artiste Karaikudi Mani, a genius in his own right and a trail blazer among percussionists, who has been reigning the concert platform for over 55 years.
This recording has a brilliant and expansive exposition of Shanmukhapriya followed by the kriti "Mamava Karunaya" , a composition of Swathi Thirunal and a crisp, yet comprehensive sketch of Kedaragowla followed by the evergreen "Venugana" composed by Thyagaraja. A superb rendition of Chandrajyothi (Bagayanayya composed by Thyagaraja) reveals SKRs penchant for rare and vivadi ragas. The hallmark of this concert is the scholarly RTP in 4 ragas namely Ranjani, Manoranjani, Janaranjani and Sriranjani in combination with spontaneous repartees from the violin maestro MSG, both complimenting each others eloquent Manodharma. A sparkling Tani Avarthanam by the great Karaikudi Mani is an added attraction to this concert.
